For some situations it is appropriate to greet your customers personally. Here at Mindfor Studios we believe that talking websites are a powerful marketing tool in SOME situations, and in others it just annoys people.
If your business is personal sales: This will usually be a small business where you are the business - in this case greeting your customers personally and making that connection with them can be very effective. The rule here is that the video must be shot tight enough that they can clearly see your face. It is all about you making eye contact with the visitor just as you would in the real world. These messages work best if they are kept short, friendly and personal.
If your business is big business: Then dont use this device, people do not need to personally identify with e-bay or amazon in order to buy from them, and they dont need to be startled with a video that suddenly pops up without warning.
Talking navigation: There are some benefits to talking navigation where it may not be obvious what a visitor should do next or which option they should select. As such they are most commonly used on websites with very heavy traffic and where there are a lot of navigation choices.
Some Point to remember
Many of your visitors will be using a work computer to visit your website and will be embarrassed to have your video start playing and give the game away with their boss. Yet other visitors will be working in a quiet room at home in bed and once again your video will disturb them. Put simply people dont like surprises on a web page - it is a very fast way to have them shut your site and not come back.
Only use this device where the benefit in making that personal, eye contact with a prospective client is likely to outweigh the annoyance factor.
